patchettReview by Cristina Vite San Pedro

This is a book of seemingly unrelated short stories. The challenge is to find out what the “Happy Marriage” looks like. Is it the author’s marriage to life and the experiences she had to go through to get there? Maybe it is the assembly of the stories that add up to a “Happy Marriage” of chapters?

The stories are mosaic chapters about family, friends, dogs, books, her husband (“Happy Marriage”) and ex-husband (not so “Happy Marriage”).

Ann Patchett analyses and shares with us her emotions about her subjects, as well as her ideas
and the research she did for her award winning
novels.

She pontificates about everyday life and issues in a profoundly moving way. For example she analyses the deep love she feels for her dog, describes her relationship with her increasingly demented grandmother, her love and loyalty to her best friend etc.

We follow her through her learning process and learn at the same time about pain and happiness and how both are related.
